Background
Designing the visual framework for a signature policy event
Each year, the American Academy of Political and Social Science hosts the Moynihan Prize event, where the annual prize recipient delivers a keynote address recognizing outstanding contributions to public policy and social science. Named for the influential U.S. senator and scholar Daniel Patrick Moynihan, the prize honors leaders whose work has shaped public understanding of complex social issues. The program is paired with a Fellows event, where newly named Fellows participate in a panel discussion reflecting on current challenges in research and policy.
Together, the events bring together leaders from academia, government, and the nonprofit sector to celebrate scholarship, public service, and the exchange of ideas. We were engaged to develop a cohesive event identity that could support both programs while maintaining the prestige and recognition associated with the Moynihan Prize.
Challenge
Create two related event identities that maintain a clear visual hierarchy.
Solution
A flexible design system that positions the Moynihan Prize as the centerpiece while allowing the Fellows program its own presence.
Results
A cohesive event experience that balances prestige, recognition, and adaptability.

The Objective
Design an identity that honors both tradition and the unique perspective of each year’s prize recipient
The Moynihan Prize carries a strong legacy within the Academy, so the visual identity must consistently feel recognizable as the Moynihan event. At the same time, each year introduces new content, speakers, and themes. The design therefore needed to accommodate shifting details, such as different panel compositions or additional speakers, while remaining structured and clearly connected to the Academy’s brand.

Design Solution
A modular identity system that adapts to changing program details
We developed a visual framework that anchors the Moynihan event within AAPSS branding while allowing the design to respond to the specific prize recipient and their lecture topic each year. Structured layouts and adaptable templates provide a consistent foundation across invitations, presentation slides, digital promotions, and event signage.
Within this system, the Fellows event is treated as a complementary extension of the Moynihan program. Its graphics share key visual elements but introduce subtle variations that distinguish the panel discussion from the keynote event. This approach allows both programs to feel connected while clearly signaling the Moynihan Prize as the centerpiece.

Challenges & Accommodations
Balancing gravity, individuality, and program flexibility
The Moynihan event must satisfy several competing needs. It must feel strongly tied to the Academy’s brand and the legacy of the prize, while also reflecting the distinction and subject matter of each year’s honoree. In addition, the design must remain flexible enough to accommodate logistical variations, such as changing numbers of Fellows panelists or additional speakers, without compromising visual consistency or clarity.

Outcomes
A durable framework that supports an evolving annual program
The resulting system provides the Academy with a dependable structure for producing event materials year after year. By combining consistent visual foundations with adaptable formats, the design ensures that each Moynihan Prize event feels both recognizable and fresh—celebrating the honoree while reinforcing the Academy’s broader mission to advance scholarship and public policy.
