Guest Post by Amandine Liepmann, Founder of LISTBURST

Email marketing remains the most powerful marketing tool for small businesses and entrepreneurs. However, with inboxes flooded with countless messages daily, finding effective ways to get people to open and act on your email blasts is crucial

To boot, increasing digital privacy laws make it essential you’re only contacting people who have explicitly expressed interest in hearing from you.

But how do you connect with people over email? And how do you motivate them to open your email and click through to your offer or the information you’re sharing?

In this blog post, we will explore strategies to captivate your audience, break through the clutter, and optimize the content of your email blasts for maximum impact and deliverability.

Crafting the Perfect Subject Line

The subject line is your email’s first impression, so it must be compelling and concise. No pressure 🤷.  To grab viewers’ attention, these are my tried-and-true expert tips:

  1. Personalization: Incorporate the recipient’s name or other relevant details to create a sense of individuality if it works for your brand.
  2. Urgency: Use time-sensitive language or limited offers to create a sense of urgency and encourage immediate action.
  3. Curiosity: Pique curiosity by hinting at valuable information or an intriguing offer without giving away too much.
  4. Clarity: Communicate the email’s purpose, ensuring it aligns with the content.

Inspiring your subscribers to take action

The biggest mistake I see companies and organizations making is overcomplicating email marketing. It’s essential to remember most people will only read your email for 7-9 seconds before deciding to take action, delete it, or report it as abuse.

But how exactly do you engage people and drive them to action in 7-9 seconds? What does it look like in practice?

Here are the top recommendations I share with clients:

  1. Be concise: As I mentioned, people have limited time and attention spans, so keep your message concise, clear, and easily scannable.
Pro tip: If you’re feeling stuck, try this trick: Write down what you want to say. Don’t judge yourself, and focus on getting it all out. Then, take it to chatgpt and enter this prompt:
Make this content more concise and readable on an 8th-grade level. Paste content

We know we’re not talking to eighth graders, nor do we think of our audience as children. However, this trick will help you edit your content in a way it’s easy to digest and be quickly deciphered. If you need more help, work with a copywriter who can help set a tone based on what you want to say.

  2. Use compelling imagery: Incorporate visually appealing images relevant to your message to capture attention and reinforce your brand identity.
  3. Craft compelling copy: Use persuasive language and a conversational tone to resonate with your audience. Highlight the benefits or value they’ll gain by taking the desired action.
  4. Personalize and segment: Tailor your message to specific segments of your audience, making it more relevant and increasing the likelihood of engagement.
  5. If people aren’t interacting with your emails after a specific time, you must archive them. Carrying dead weight and subscribers not engaging with your content can drive down your deliverability score.

Maintaining a high-quality list

By 2027, revenue generated by email marketing is expected to hit 17.9 billion USD. That’s up from 10.3 billion in 2023. (Hubspot) Email marketing is a very fast-growing marketing channel for a few excellent reasons:

  1. It has the highest return on investment of any marketing channel. Did you know every $1 invested in email marketing yields an average return of $36? To put this in perspective, the average ROI for social media is $5 for every $1 invested.
  2. It’s algorithm-proof. The next time TikTok or Instagram changes things up, your sales and engagement will be able to withstand the fallout.
  3. You own your contact information and data. You’re not privy to this information on social media.

This makes it even more important to break through the email marketing clutter and build a high-quality list of engaged, active subscribers.

Here’s how you do it:

  1. Test different send times: Experiment with sending your emails at different times of the day or week to determine when your audience will most likely be engaged.
  2. Segment your audience: By dividing your email list into targeted segments based on demographics, interests, or past interactions, you can deliver more relevant content to each group.
  3. A/B testing: Test different subject lines, visuals, and content formats to identify what resonates best with your audience and generates higher open and click-through rates.
  4. Maintain a consistent brand identity: Use a recognizable and consistent visual design, color palette, and tone of voice throughout your email blasts to reinforce your brand and make it easily identifiable.

Mastering the art of email blasts is essential for small businesses and entrepreneurs to cut through the noise and drive action from their target audience. By implementing the strategies discussed in this blog post, you can significantly increase the effectiveness of your email marketing campaigns.
